Petra Kvitova and Erika Andreeva are scheduled to face one another in the first round match of the US Open 2022 on Tuesday, August 30.
Petra Kvitova, world No. 21 and former No. 2, has had a difficult year in 2022. Her record is a respectable 22-16, but she hasn’t been the most consistent performer on the circuit. Having said that, she appears to be ready to turn things around at Flushing Meadows in New York. Most recently, the 32-year-old finished second in the Cincinnati Open, defeating Jil Teichmann, Ons Jabeur, and Madison Keys en route to the final. She eventually lost in straight sets to Caroline Garcia, but she set herself up nicely for the season’s final major. Other highlights for Kvitova include a title run in the Eastbourne 500 (her 29th singles title) and quarter final appearances in Miami and Dubai.
Erika Andreeva, 18, is scheduled to make her Grand Slam debut at the US Open after winning the qualifiers last week. She defeated Dea Herdela, Rebeka Masarova, and Kamilla Rakhimova along the way. Andreeva has spent the majority of the season competing on the ITF circuit, and her season record as of this point is 36-14. She has experienced some success, most notably finishing in second place in a $100k qualifier event in Spain and making a few late-stage appearances. Her experience on the WTA Tour is limited, and her best performance was in St. Petersburg, where she advanced all the way to the qualifying round.
