Monday's first round of the 2022 San Diego Open will feature Veronika Kudermetova, the 12th-ranked player in the world, taking on Sloane Stephens, who is ranked 50.

Kudermetova has been moving up the rankings charts this season, and after another strong performance last week in Monastir, the Russian is now rated at a career-high 12th in the world. Given that she was a massive 2/5 favourite going into her match with Alize Cornet at the Monastir Open, Kudermetova would have likely intended to perform much better than the semifinal finish. She was unfortunately eliminated after losing to Cornet in straight sets.
Strangely, Stephens chose to compete in the Parma Open, a clay court event, between the conclusion of the US Open Series and the beginning of the season’s last month of WTA tennis. The American also faded to an early loss in Parma, just as Stephens did for the majority of the remaining season. Stephens can certainly take people by surprise from time to time; to go along with his title win in Guadalajara earlier this year, he also made it to the quarterfinals in Roland-Garros. But it’s really challenging to support a player like that when they only triumph in five of the remaining 19 matches at the highest level.
Veronika Kudermetova and Sloane Stephens are scheduled to face each other in the round of 32 of the 2022 WTA San Diego Open on Monday, October 10. The tournament is scheduled to begin on October 10 and end on October 16.
The WTA San Diego Open will have five rounds of action excluding the qualifiers. These are the round of 32, round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The competition’s main draw is set to commence on October 10, 2022 and conclude on October 16, 2022.
