Anett Kontaveit, who entered the Canadian Open as the second seed, fell at the first hurdle in this competition. Following a first-round bye, the Estonian fell to Jil Teichmann in straight sets to exit the tournament. That defeat came on the heels of a quarterfinal loss in Prague, also on a hard court surface, to the unheralded Anastasia Potapova, 6-1, 6-1. These results are surprising because Kontaveit’s performances in hard court tournaments earlier this year indicated good form and consistency. Aside from her title win at the St. Petersburg Open, she had also reached the semifinals of the Sydney International and was a losing finalist in Doha.

Tereza Martincova hasn’t been in the best of form recently, but defeating Irina Begu and Magda Linette in the qualifiers, despite being a second-favorite in both of those matches, appeared to be more than enough. Martincova lost the first set in a tie-breaker in her opener against Nuria Parrizas Diaz, but came back to beat her opponent and set up this meeting with Kontaveit. Martincova dropped her serve five times during the two-hour and 38-minute match, but she broke her opponent eight times. This was her eighth win on this surface this season, but she also had ten defeats.
