Kasatkina and Kvitova are set to face each other in the quarter-final of the 2023 Adelaide International 2 on Thursday, January 12.
On her third attempt, Daria Kasatkina triumphed in Adelaide’s main draw for the first time. She had previously fallen to Linda Noskova (last week) and Belinda Bencic (2020) at the Memorial Drive Tennis Center, but on Wednesday she defeated Barbora Krejcikova with ease, 6-2, 7-5, using 16 winners to just seven unforced errors. Since late August, she has not won two consecutive matches, which is unusual for a player who won her fifth and sixth career titles in San Jose and Granby in the same month. She had a 6-2 overall record in quarterfinal matches the season before, with two of the ensuing semifinal matches occurring in Australia (Sydney and Melbourne).
For the first time in the new season, Petra Kvitova was on the verge of dropping a set. The 20-year-old Zheng Qinwen, her opponent, twice served for the first set and went on to win the tiebreak 6-3. The Chinese player eventually retired due to a left thigh problem after the Czech saved all three set points and won the set 7-6 (6). She began the year by easily defeating Jessica Pegula and Laura Siegemund in the United Cup, and this week she defeated reigning Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina 6-3, 7-5. She hadn’t started a year with a 4-0 or better win-loss record before winning Brisbane in 2011.

1-0 is Petra Kvitova’s advantage. In the 2018 Madrid Open quarterfinals, the pair competed against one another. Both of them were in the top 20, as they are currently, but the 32-year-old produced a 65-minute masterclass to defeat Daria Kasatkina, 6-4, 6-0, and went on to win that clay-court competition for a third time.
