Karatsev and Martinez will take on each other in the last eight of the Tata Open Maharashtra on January 5.
In his previous ATP Pune campaigns in 2020 (QR1) and 2022 (R2, R1 bye), Aslan Karatsev failed to win a single match, but he has now reached the quarterfinals without dropping a set this time around. In the second round, he defeated Tim Van Rijthoven, who was making his tournament debut, in two tiebreakers, 6-1 6-3 and 7-6 7-6. He also defeated the 36-year-old Pablo Andujar in straight sets. The Russian fell short of expectations in 2022, and more than eight months of his subpar performance caused him to drop out of the top-50 group. In fact, since losing in the ATP Hamburg quarterfinals in July, this is just the second time he has won back-to-back matches.
Pedro Martinez won similar matches against Sebastian Baez and Ramkumar Ramanathan on his debut, securing a spot in Pune’s quarterfinals. On both occasions, he dropped the opening set 3-6 before taking the decisive set 6-3 to secure the victory. Aslan Karatsev’s 2022 and the Spaniard’s were strikingly similar. He began the year in Santiago with a victory, but his performance dipped in the months that followed, and he ended the year with a losing record.
