Marton Fucsovics and Jannik Sinner will square off once more in a rematch of their third-round Australian Open encounter, where the Hungarian jumped out to a two-set lead but the Italian battled back and lost just three games in the final three sets combined. After having physical issues towards the end of the 2022 campaign, Jannik Sinner didn’t seem to be in his best physical shape to start the 2023 season. In a defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16 at the Australian Open, he had his best performance of the year. Early in his career, the world’s number 17 player put together an impressive 11-match winning streak on indoor hard courts at lower-level circuits, and four of his seven title-winning seasons on the main tour have occurred on surfaces. But in both of his prior ATP Montpellier campaigns, in 2020 and 2021, he was winless.
By winning this week’s first round match against French qualifier Geoffrey Blancaneaux, Marton Fucsovics earned his eighth victory of the 2023 campaign. In the second set, he was unable to serve out the match, but he quickly regained composure and won the match with a bagel. The Hungarian has faced 99 breakpoints in only 12 matches during the first five weeks of the 2023 season, despite playing eight opponents who are outside the top 100. In the ATP Adelaide 2 qualifying rounds, he even lost in straight sets to Robin Haase, who was ranked #257 at the time.
