The second seed John Isner will face fifth seed Benjamin Bonzi in a quarterfinal round of 2022 Hall of fame open on Thursday.
In the second round (R1 bye) of this tournament, John Isner beat Peter Gojowczyk easily in straight sets to extend his winning streak in Newport to nine games. He served 22 aces, allowed only four first-serve points to be scored, and kept all of his service games, 6-3, 7-6. One of the main tour’s most beloved events for the big-serving American player is the ATP Newport. He has won the championship here four times, including his most recent two appearances in 2017 and 2019. In his past two appearances in ATP 250 tournaments in Dallas and Houston earlier this year, the former American No. 1 won all three of his matches against players from other countries. He also advanced at least to the semifinals in both of those tournaments.
In his first week at the ATP Newport, Benjamin Bonzi saw some American competition, and the challenge will grow as he plays John Isner, a past champion, in the quarterfinal. In the first round, he had to defeat the qualifier William Blumberg in three sets, and in the second round, he had to overturn a 2-5 deficit against Christopher Eubanks in the second-set tiebreaker. Prior to 2022, the Frenchman has never participated in a quarterfinal match on the main tour; nevertheless, this will be his third such contest during the current grass swing. He was forced to withdraw from his quarterfinal match against Daniel Altmaier in Stuttgart last month and won this match in Mallorca a few weeks later. This will the first time when Bonzi will face Isner in a match.
John Isner and Benjamin Bonzi will take on each other on Thursday, July 14 in the quarterfinal of the 2022 ATP Hall of Fame Open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 11 and conclude on July 17 this year.
