If there was somebody who embodies the word ‘consistency’ in world tennis today, it is Iga Swiatek. She became the first ever tennis athlete representing Poland to win major singles titles, with the French Open crowns of 2020 and 2022. She became the youngest player to win Roland Garros since Rafael Nadal in 2005 in the 2020 campaign and the youngest women’s Grand Slam winner since Maria Sharapova in 2004. In 2022, she managed to go as far as the semi-final of the Australian Open in addition to winning her second French Open. The same year saw her go on a winning streak of mammoth proportions as she won 37 wins on the trot. It was the longest winning streak in history, breaking previous record set by Serena Williams (35) in 2000. Swiatek really came into her own in the 2022 season, winning six titles, including the French Open, only halfway through the year.

Junior Career

2018 was the best year for Swiatek as a junior if one goes by the records. By that time, she had already established herself as one of the brightest prospects in world tennis. After a one-year absence, the Pole returned to competitive junior action and took part in the French Open juniors event. Swiatek was defeated as a singles competitor in the semi-final but in the doubles category, she and Caty McNally went the distance to win the title. That was her first junior Grand Slam title. The Pole did not have to wait long to get her second as she won the Wimbledon juniors campaign in the singles category and she dropped only one set throughout the tournament. The Pole then teamed up with Slovenia’s Kaja Juvan to to compete at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics, where she won the gold medal after beating the Japanese duo of Yuki Naito and Naho Sato.

Senior Career

Although Swiatek had already started to prove her talent in 2019, the year she turned professional, the Pole really left her stamp on world tennis in 2020 when she won her first ever Grand Slam, at just the age of 19. She became the youngest woman to win a Grand Slam Maria Sharapova in 2004. The Pole had to get through the likes of then world no. 2 Simona Halep, who was on a 17-game winning streak. She went up against world no. 6 Sofia Kenin in the final defeated her to set two new records at the time: the first ever Polish player to win a Grand Slam and the lowest ranked player to win a Grand Slam (she was ranked 54 at the time).

Longest winning run of the century

However, the best year of her career has to be the 2022 season so far. After Ash Barty’s retirement, there was almost no one who could match up to the consistency and quality of tennis Swiatek played. The Pole had been on a 37-game winning streak that saw her win the Qatar Open, Indian Wells Masters, Miami Open, Stuttgart Open, Italian Open and French Open back to back. Her streak was brought to an end at Wimbledon by Alize Cornet in the third round. In 21st century, Swiatek’s streak is the longest, dethroning Serena Williams who previously held the record with 35 straight wins back in 2000.
