In the opening round of the ATP Vienna, Hubert Hurkacz had to fight hard to defeat US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe. He fought back from being down 1-5 in the tiebreaker to win the match 7-6 3-6 6-3. He saved back-to-back breakpoints at 3-3 in the first set. It is imperative for him to leave Vienna with more points than last week’s ATP Antwerp champion, who cannot gain points until the semifinal (in Basel this week), as the Pole #1 allowed Felix Auger Aliassime to extend the lead in the Race to Turin in Antwerp last week. He cannot afford to lose any more ground to the Canadian.

In the first round this week, Emil Ruusuvuori maintained his excellent form by easily defeating Lorenzo Sonego, the ATP Metz champion from last month. He jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set and generated several of opportunities on returns while dominating the serve, 6-2 6-3. Ten of his 11 matches on indoor hard courts this year have ended in straight sets, and in the seven matches he won—including ones against Frances Tiafoe and Jeffrey John Wolf, both of whom were playing well—he did not give up more than four games in a set.
