Exactly 12 months after pulling out of his quarterfinal match against Rafael Nadal (the #1 seed) in his season opener in Melbourne 2022, Tallon Griekspoor has advanced to the semifinals without having to win the quarterfinals in Pune. The top seed in the quarterfinals was once again the Dutch #2, but unlike in Melbourne in January, Marin Cilic was compelled to withdraw. He defeated Marco Cecchinato and Jaume Munar Clar in straight sets earlier in this season, both of whom advanced to the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinal against Pedro Martinez, the current ATP Santiago champion, Aslan Karatsev put on his best performance of the year. He hasn’t lost a set this week, and in two of the three matches, he’s given up fewer than five games. The former world number 14 missed the ATP Cup last year because of COVID, but he won it in his first match in Sydney, which ended up being his best week of the season because he struggled in the months that followed and eventually dropped out of the top 50.
