Following a first-round bye, second seed Matteo Berrettini will face Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the 2022 Swiss Open second round on Thursday. Berrettini missed the whole clay season after undergoing minor hand surgery following the Miami Open in March. The Italian won the Stuttgart Open in his first competition since making his comeback, defeating Andy Murray in the final. The Italian was the runner-up at Wimbledon last year and, based on his recent success, was considered one of the favorites to win the championship this year. Unfortunately, after testing positive for COVID-19, he was forced to withdraw from the competition.
In the first round, Richard Gasquet faced Roberto Carballes Baena. The Frenchman dropped the opening two games of the match, but then won the next three to take a 3-2 lead. The pair stayed on service until the finish, when Carballes Baena was broken while serving to stay in the match, gifting his opponent the first set. Gasquet was on the defensive at the start of the second set, down 3-1. He rallied back, winning three games in a row to go ahead 4-3. Carballes Baena was serving to remain in the match at 5-4 when the Frenchman broke his serve for the final time, winning 7-5, 6-4.
