Garcia and Fernandez will take on each other in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open on January 18.
The 24-year-old Katherine Sebov has improved to 190th in the world, a career-high position, and has qualified for this competition after three straight victories, one of which came against the hot-shot Linda Noskova. She encountered much more difficulty when facing Garcia, the world number four, who breezed past Sebov to advance to the second round. Garcia defeated Sebov 6-3, 6-0 in just 66 minutes, winning the last nine games to put an end to Sebov’s challenge at 3-3 in the first set.
After defeating another player in her opening round, Fernandez will now take on a Frenchwoman. Contrary to Garcia, Alize Cornet entered the competition with very little form, and even though Fernandez hasn’t had a lot of favourable results, she was the 3/5 favourite to win. Despite winning it in straight sets, Fernandez had to overcome a sluggish start before finding her groove. In one hour and 42 minutes, Fernandez prevailed 7-5, 6-2.
