Taylor Fritz and Sebastian Baez are scheduled to face one another in the Opening round of the 2022 Cincinnati Open on Monday, August 15.
While Tiafoe would have been overjoyed with his first-round victories at the Canadian Open in Montreal last week, a third-round loss to Dan Evans would have been difficult to swallow. Especially since Taylor Fritz entered the match as a 1/2 favorite after some strong recent performances. He had also knocked out Andy Murray in the first round and then edged out Frances Tiafoe in the second, but was found to be on the receiving end of Evans’ racquet for the second time in as many weeks. He begins his Cincinnati Open campaign, having never advanced past the first round of the tournament in three previous appearances.
Sebastian Baez, who excels on clay courts, has had a lot of difficulty this year in hard court competitions. Baez has only triumphed in two main draw matches overall in the eight tournaments of this type this season, and none since advancing to the second round at the Australian Open. It was then almost seven months ago. Baez has participated in the Indian Wells Masters, Miami Masters, Washington Open, and Montreal this month during that time. Sebastian didn’t even win a round at a Challenger tournament he played in on hard courts earlier this year, adding salt to the wounds. Baez will hope for the best against Fritz in this match, given his recent performance.
