Grigor Dimitrov and Fabio Fognini will take on one another in the second round of the 2022 Paris Masters on Wednesday, November 2.
Grigor Dimitrov made a strong start to the Paris Masters, defeating the Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Tuesday to advance to the second round. The Bulgarian, who reached the Paris semi finals in 2017, needed an hour and 56 minutes to defeat the Dutch player 7-6 (7-5), 7-6. (7-5). Van de Zandschulp took the first break in both sets, but the Bulgarian reclaimed it both times, eventually winning the sets in tiebreaks. Dimitrov, an eight-time tour champion, is coming off a strong performance in Vienna last week. He came close to reaching a 16th final twice in 2022, but was eliminated in the semifinals in Monte-Carlo and Melbourne.
Fabio Fognini got his revenge on world no. 308 Arthur Fils in two hours and 37 minutes, defeating the French qualifier 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (4-7), 6-2. Fognini, who was also part of the qualifiers, fell in the second qualifying round to Fils 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, allowing the Frenchman to enter the main draw as a qualifier and Fognini to enter as a lucky loser. Fognini, on the other hand, ruined the 18-year-tour-level debut by defeating him in three sets. In the 12th game of the first set, Fognini secured a set point on his serve before winning the ensuing tiebreak. Fognini has advanced to the third round of the Paris Masters just once.
