Cristian Garin has had a bad past few months and he will be adamant to perform well in the Indian Wells Masters as well. At the Australian Open and the Rio Open, he bowed out of the tournament in the first round itself to Korda and Martinez respectively. At the Cordoba Open and the Chile Open, he made it to the round of 16 stage losing to Sousa and Baez respectively. At the Noumea Challenger, he made it to the semi-finals losing to Brancaccio after beating the likes of Diaz Acosta, Fancutt, and Delaney on the way. In the ongoing Indian Wells, he beat Tien in the first qualifier by 5-7, 6-7, and then in the second qualifier, he beat Misolic by 6-4, 6-2. In the round of 128 matchup, he beat Galan by 4-6, 2-6 and he beat Nishioka in the round of 64 stage by 4-6, 0-6.
Casper Ruud was in great form last season and ended the last year in fine fashion and will be motivated to be back to his regular good form after having a bad start to the new year. He played at the ATP World Tour Finals recently where he made it to the finals beating the likes of Rublev, Fritz, and Auger-Aliassime on the way. He only lost to Rafa Nadal in the group stage round and then in the finals, he had to settle for second place as Novak Djokovic showed immense caliber to win the match. In the tournaments before that, he made it to the round of 16 stage at the Paris Masters and got knocked out of the Japan Open and Swiss Indoors right in the first round. At the Australian Open and the Mexican Open, he bowed out of the tournament in the second stage itself. In the ongoing Indian Wells, he beat Schwartzman in the first-round matchup by 2-6, 3-6.
