After a stop-start season, Danielle Collins has finally established a foothold in back-to-back tournaments, reaching the semifinals here after reaching the fourth round of the US Open. And she did so with her third straight-set victory, this time defeating world number four Paula Badosa 7-6 (5), 6-4. Collins was on court for nearly two hours and needed six break of serve breaks to eke out a narrow victory over her Spanish opponent. The first set saw eight serve breaks, leading to a tie-breaker in which Collins never trailed before winning. In the second game, the players traded breaks in the third and fourth games before Collins took the decisive break in the seventh.
A season of struggle appears to be paying off for Donna Vekic, who appears to be in the form that propelled her to number 19 in the world at one point. Vekic, who began as a qualifier in this tournament, had already eliminated Maria Sakkari and Karolina Pliskova. Despite this, she was 6/4 to surprise Aryna Sabalenka in her quarterfinal, which she did. After going a break up twice in the second set, Vekic defeated Sabalenka 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-1 in a match that lasted over two and a half hours. Most experts agreed that after Sabalenka won that set, the momentum was squarely with the Belarussian, but Vekic broke her opponent twice to win the match.
