On Friday, the world's number 19 Danielle Collins will compete in the second round of the 2022 US Open against Cristina Bucsa, who is ranked 118th.
Despite being the underdog in her first-round match against the former champion Naomi Osaka, Danielle Collins proved she is not to be taken lightly by winning in straight sets. In a match that took an hour and 36 minutes to complete, Collins prevailed 7-6 (5), 6-3. Osaka had opportunities but was not permitted to take use of them. Osaka started things off in both sets with a service break, but Collins was able to recover and outrun her rival. Collins came back from being down 0-3 in the first set to win it in a tie-breaker despite not having participated in a single match of the US Open Series leading up to the year’s last Grand Slam. Additionally, after serving for a 3-1 lead in the second game, Osaka lost her serve in the fourth and eighth games, giving up the match.
On a hard court, there wasn’t much to choose between Cristina Bucsa and Kaja Juvan in the opening round, but the qualifier ultimately won in straight sets. For the first time in her career, Bucsa advanced to the second round of a Grand Slam with a 6-4, 6-4 victory in less than an hour and a half. The Spaniard defeated Juvan in the opening game, and while she wasted three set points at 3-5 on her opponent’s serve, Bucsa moved closer by serving the opening set. After breaking her opponent in game one of the second set, Bucsa appeared to be repeating the pattern before dropping her serve in game six. Juvan dropped serve once more at 4-4, giving Bucsa to serve the game out.
Danielle Collins and Cristina Bucsa are scheduled to face one another in the second round match of the US Open 2022 on Friday, September 2. The 2022 US Open is all set to begin from August 29 till September 11.
