Francisco Cerundolo is on a seven-match winning streak and is playing some of the greatest tennis he has ever played. The confidence with which he’s striking the ball has been amazing to witness, and the results have backed it up. A first title in Bastad, two good wins in Hamburg, one of which was a 6-4 6-2 victory against Andrey Rublev. When you realize he was behind 0-3 and then 2-4, the victory is even more amazing, since he practically won 10 of the previous 12 games. No less than Rublev. Cerundolo is 32-19 on the season, which is a good start, but the second half of the season should be even better.
They played once before and it happened last week in Bastad. Cerundolo won 7-5 6-1. Aslan Karatsev has had a difficult year thus far, but the Russian player has recently found some form with a pair of solid wins. He had a good time at Bastad, but he lost against Cerundolo. Cerundolo will now compete for a place in the Hamburg semifinal. Karatsev’s performance has been much stronger at Hamburg, as seen by two good wins. A win against Nikoloz Basilashvili was impressive, as was another over Daniel Galan. Karatsev’s 14-17 score this year suggests that he has reached a plateau on the ATP level.

The 2022 Hamburg European Open will have five rounds of play both for the ATP and WTA competitors. These are the first round, second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. The tournament is scheduled to be held from July 18 to July 24, but the qualifiers will commence from July 16 for both the men’s and women’s categories.
