Marco Cecchinato was formerly rated 16th in the world, but Cecchinato’s difficulties have been so severe that he now ranks outside the top 150 on the ATP Rankings lists. He possibly qualified for this event because his opponent in the second round withdrew from the tournament. Cecchinato’s opening match against the 537th-ranked Mili Polijicak provided another look into his form issue, as he was stretched to almost two hours and three sets to win. Nobody gave Cecchinato much chance against Lorenzo Musetti, with bookies pegged at 11/4 to win. Cecchinato and Agamenone haven’t faced off in a competitive match before this.

Franco Agamenone has never competed in the main draw of an ATP competition before this season, only appearing on an irregular basis in the Futures and Challenger circuits. He made his main draw debut at the French Open this year, aged 29, after qualifying as a fortunate loser but losing his opener. He had no idea that not long after that, Agamenone would be not only qualifying for his second career event, but also winning matches. Agamenone was 7/2 to beat Laslo Djere in his first match, which he won in three hard-fought sets, but that was followed by an even tougher match against Sebastian Baez, who started as a 3/20 favourite to terminate Agamenone’s magical run.
