The ATP Napoli winner from the previous week and his doubles partner Lorenzo Musetti’s four-match (and nine-set) winning streak were broken by Albert Ramos Vinolas in the opening round of the ATP Basel tournament. He only managed to win one point in the lopsided opening set and came dangerously close to losing the match 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. Before travelling to Basel, the seasoned Spaniard had lost four matches in a row at all levels, and he hadn’t triumphed on an indoor hard court since the 2018 Paris Masters qualifications.

This week, Alexander Bublik defeated fortunate loser Aslan Karatsev in a straightforward victory to begin his first ATP Basel season. He lost a break advantage in the second set, but it didn’t hurt him much because he won the tiebreaker, 6-3 7-6. The big-serving Kazakh has won 13 of a potential 17 matches on indoor hard courts in 2022 alone, compared to the Spaniard’s total of 22 victories during the course of his lengthy career. In Montpellier, he won his first ATP title, and last month in Metz, he came in second.
