On Monday, the 2022 ATP Hamburg Open's opening round will feature the fifth seed Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands taking on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina of Spain.
On clay this year, Botic van de Zandschulp had some of his best tennis skills. It’s hardly a coincidence because the Dutch player spent most of his Challenger Tour time playing on that surface. He can cause a lot of damage with his serve and forehand and moves extremely well on it. His greatest performance this year across all surfaces is on clay, where he is 11-6. In Munich, he participated in a final on the surface as well, but he had breathing issues and had to leave the game. He should perform well in Hamburg because the playing surface does favour aggressive players. Returning to clay with a good chance to cause some damage in Hamburg will make him happy. Initially challenging, but he eventually passed earlier this year on grass.
Last week, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina competed in Bastad, but he only managed to win one match there before losing to Sebastian Baez. The encounter against Baez wasn’t terrible, but the Argentine proved to be significantly superior and in charge for many portions of the contest. The usual problem for Fokina was his inability to consistently produce a level that wasn’t winner-error over and over again. The biggest issue for him is that he can play just as well as he did in Monte-Carlo when he plays regularly. Completely out of shape with a mediocre return to clay. Hamburg offers a fresh opportunity, but the opposition is formidable. One who has already defeated him, thus Fokina must give his all if he wants to stay in the game.
Botic van de Zandschulp will take on each other on Monday, July 18 in the first round of the 2022 ATP Hamburg European open. The competition is scheduled to commence on July 18 and conclude on July 24 this year.
