Ana Bogdan and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova will see each other in the second round of the 2022 WTA Emilia-Romagna Open September 28.
Ana Bogdan defeated Laura Pigossi 6-1, 6-2 in the WTA Emilia-Romagna opening match, continuing her strong form. Given her long list of recent impressive results, it is not surprising. The 29-year-old most recently upset Beatriz Haddad Maia, Ajla Tomljanovic, and Tamara Zidansek to reach the semifinals of the Slovenia Open. Bogdan had previously finished second in the Poland Open and first in the Iasi Challenger. Ana also won an ITF championship earlier in the season in France and advanced to the later rounds of a few 125K competitions in Gaiba and Paris. Bogdan is one of the players in Parma to beat right now with a record of 32-14.
Anna Karolina Schmiedlova is on a roll in Italy, having won three matches without dropping a set. Two of them came in qualifying matches against Jessica Peri and Alycia Parks. The Slovak kept the same pace in the opener, defeating Reka Jani 6-2, 6-4. The results come after Schmiedlova lost in straight sets to Viktoriya Tomova in the quarterfinals of the Budapest Challenger. Unfortunately, she hasn’t had a run like this on the WTA Tour since February’s Abierto Zapopan in Guadalajara. She has reached this stage (and beyond) on the Challenger circuit, but it hasn’t helped her rankings. She is now ranked #118 and has a record of 23-23.
