Novak Djokovic began his campaign for the 2022 ATP Finals with a straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas. Taking on the Greek for the fourth time this year, the 21-time Grand Slam champion once again executed his gameplan flawlessly, winning 6-4, 7-6 (4). The Serb made a commanding start to the match, breaking Tsitsipas’ serve in his first service game. The pair then held serve for the rest of the set before Djokovic won it 6-4 without facing a break point.

The second set was much closer, with the pair retaining serves one after the other. Tsitisipas faced no break points this time, while the World No. 8 saved the one break point he faced. However, in the ensuing tiebreaker, the former World No. 1 came out on top, winning five consecutive points at one point before winning the match.

Tsitsipas and Djokovic both won 80% of their first serve points on the night, with the Greek winning 36/45 and Djokovic winning 37/46. However, in terms of second serve points, the 35-year-old came out on top, winning 76% (13/17) to Tsitsipas’ 56% (9/16). All of this despite the fact that the 21-time Grand Slam champion served fewer aces and more double faults than his opponent.

During the match, the seventh seed won 66 points, hitting 33 winners while making only 12 unforced errors. Tsitsipas, on the other hand, made 22 unforced errors and 24 winners. With the win, Novak Djokovic has firmly established himself at the top of the Red Group, ahead of Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev.

Stefanos Tsitsipas now has a 2-10 head-to-head record against Novak Djokovic after his loss on Monday at the 2022 ATP Finals, with four of the losses coming this year alone. Worryingly, the Greek has now lost eight consecutive matches to the 21-time Grand Slam champion, four of which have been finals.
