American table tennis player Lily Ann Zhang was born on June 16, 1996. She participated in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London alongside teammates Ariel Hsing and Erica Wu. In addition, she participated in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics alongside Jiaqi Zheng and Jennifer Wu. She has won the women’s singles US national championship six times. The US national championship was won by Zhang in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019 and 2022. She won the women’s doubles championship at the Qatar Peace and Sport Cup in 2011 and placed third in both the Pan American Games women’s singles and women’s team competitions. As of right now, she plays for the US National Women’s team. She holds the top five ranks in the junior (U-18) and cadet (U-15) global rankings, respectively.
Chinese parents welcomed Lily Ann Zhang into the world on June 16, 1996, in Redwood City, California. Her father was a mathematics professor at Stanford University, where her family resided. When Lily was growing up, she loved playing table tennis with her parents. Her mother was a player for the table tennis team in Xi’an, China. After Palo Alto High School, Lily enrolled in the University of California, Berkeley in 2014. Lily Ann took a year off after her first year to prepare for the 2016 Olympic Games. She played league in Austria for a portion of her gap year and trained at her local club, ICC.
Lily Zhang showed excellent talent from an early age. Dennis Davis, the president and head coach of the Palo Alto Table Tennis Club as well as the junior commission representative for the International Table Tennis Federation’s North American division, started mentoring her when she was 7 years old. Zhang joined the U.S. Cadet Team at the age of eleven. Zhang rose from being the youngest player to ever reach the U.S. Women’s Team at the age of 12 to the number two ranking of Junior Women table tennis players in the country at the age of 13.
