Two-time Asian Games bronze medalist diver Chew Yiwei has announced his retirement from professional diving. Since his parents wanted him to concentrate on his academics, the 27-year-old, who has spent the last 13 years as a member of the Malaysian national diving squad, has decided to leave the team. Yiwei has participated in the National Sports Council (NSC) curriculum since he was 13 years old and is currently in his final year of computer science program With just a few months to get ready for the Asian Games in Hangzhou in September, Yiwei’s resignation has been officially acknowledged by Mae Chen, secretary of the Malaysia Swimming Federation.

Chew Yiwei is one of the senior divers on the national team. Hence, his retirement will be a significant loss for the team Malaysia. In 2018, he was the only Malaysian male diver to win a medal at the Asian Games 2018 which took place in Indonesia, where he clinched the bronze medal in the men’s 3m springboard individual. In 2014, he won a bronze medal in the men’s 10m platform synchro event at the Asian Games in Incheon, partnering alongside Ooi Tze Liang.

What Chew Yiwei said on his social media post

The former Asian Games medalist announced the same on social media, where he expressed his gratitude to the Olympic Council of Malaysia, NSC, Malaysia Swimming, and the National Sports Institute for providing him with opportunities and services throughout his diving career. He acknowledged that without their support, he would not have achieved the success he has had so far. “Officially, I’m retired. No more diving for me,” said Yiwei on his Instagram account. His statement also read, “Some day I laugh, loved, fight or even cried, however, never a day I regretted being a diver. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, everytime I made memories. I will remember all my teammates,” as he bid-adieu to the sport.

Chew Yiwei’s other accomplishments

Besides winning at Asian Games, Chew Yiwei represented Malaysia at the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and 2018, and the Southeast Asian Games in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021. At the Southeast Asian Games, he won four gold medals which includes three golds in the 3 m synchro springboard and one in the 10 m synchro platform. He also clinched a bronze medal in the 3m Springboard in 2013.
