Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, popularly known as Vidit Gujrathi, is one of the elite chess players in India. In January 2013, Vidit achieved his grandmaster status, making him the 30th Indian to accomplish this feat. As of September 2023, he is the fourth highest-ranked chess player in India, with Gukesh D, Viswanathan Anand, and R Praggnanandhaa leading him. Impressively, he also ranks among the four Indians to breach the Elo 2700 barrier.
Vidit Gujrathi was born in Nashik, to Santosh and Nikita Gujrathi, on 24 October 1994. The Fravashi Academy witnessed his early education and budding interest in chess. In 2006, his talent earned him a second position in the Asian Youth Championships (U12) and the FIDE Master title. Two years later, in Chennai, he captured the International Master title, and in a significant victory, he emerged as the first Indian to claim the U14 World Youth Chess Championship.
In 2009, he almost clinched the U16 World Youth Chess Championship title, tying with India’s S. P. Sethuraman. Vidit continued to shine, securing his first GM norm at Chennai’s World Junior Chess Championship in 2011. That year also saw him perform exceptionally in the Nagpur International Open. In 2012, his dedication finally paid off at the Rose Valley Kolkata Open Grandmasters’ chess tournament, where he bagged his final GM norm at just 18. His trajectory continued upwards with significant placements in 2013’s tournaments in Hyderabad and Turkey.
Throughout his journey, renowned coaches, including IM Anup Deshmukh, IM Roktim Bandopadhyay, and GM Alon Greenfeld, have guided him. Vidit’s potential was so evident that Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte once anticipated that his Elo rating would soon hit 2700. In recent years, Vidit participated in top-tier events like the 2019 Tata Steel Rapid and Blitz and led the Indian team to gold in the 2020 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad. He also left a mark in the 2022 FIDE Grand Prix and solidified his status in global chess.
