Born on January 12, 1991, in the city of Guntur, Harika Dronavalli embarked on her chess journey from the young age of seven. She grabbed prominence by clinching medals in the national under-9 championship and the world youth chess championship for girls under-10. Her mentor NVS Ramaraju helped her climb to newer heights. She emerged as India’s second female grandmaster, following in the footsteps of Koneru Humpy.

Harika’s career has been decorated with numerous accolades and achievements. The years 2016 and 2017 were particularly significant for her. In 2016, she won the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix in Chengdu and showcased her talent at the Asian Women Team Chess Championship in the UAE, earning multiple individual medals. A year later, she added another feather to her cap with a bronze medal at the Women’s World Chess Championship in Tehran.

For her commitment and dedication to the sport, the Indian government honored Harika Dronavalli with the Arjuna Award in 2007-08, and in 2019, she received the esteemed Padma Shri for her notable contributions to sports. In 2019, Harika was pivotal in leading the Indian team to exceptional performances at international championships, while also individually excelling in various tournaments.

Throughout her journey, Harika has been inspired by chess legends such as Vladimir Kramnik, Judit Polgar, and India’s very own Viswanathan Anand. Some of her prominent achievements are as follows: from guiding India to its best-ever finish at the Women Chess Olympiad in Turkey in 2012, to winning the Commonwealth Women Chess Championship in New Delhi in 2010, and leading the Indian women’s team to victory in Kolkata in 2009. Every year, she continues to make India proud on the international chess board.
