Vidit Santosh Gujrathi, a top Indian chess player, achieved the prestigious grandmaster title in January 2013, joining the elite club as the 30th Indian. As of September 2023, he is ranked as India’s fourth best, with only Gukesh D, Viswanathan Anand, and R Praggnanandhaa outscoring him. Vidit stands as the fourth Indian to surpass the coveted Elo 2700 mark.

Born in Nashik on 24 October 1994 to Santosh and Nikita Gujrathi, Vidit began his educational journey at Fravashi Academy. His passion for chess emerged early in his life. He clinched the second position in the Asian Youth Championships (U12) in 2006, which awarded him the FIDE Master title. In 2008, he grabbed the International Master title in Chennai’s Velammal 45th National A Chess Championship. That same year, he made history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Youth Chess Championship in the U14 category.

The year 2009 saw Vidit narrowly missing the top spot in the U16 World Youth Chess Championship, which tied him with the champion, S. P. Sethuraman, from India. He showcased his prowess at the World Junior Chess Championship in Chennai in 2011, securing his maiden GM norm. Vidit then finished a close second at the Nagpur International Open the same year and clinching his second GM norm. His dedication was seen in the Rose Valley Kolkata Open Grandmasters’ chess tournament in 2012, where he finalized his GM status at just 18 years of age. In subsequent years, Vidit consistently showcased his mettle, with a notable third-place finish in 2013’s Hyderabad International Grandmasters chess tournament and a bronze in Turkey’s World Junior Chess Championship.

Over the years, expert coaches such as IM Anup Deshmukh, IM Roktim Bandopadhyay, and GM Alon Greenfeld have mentored him. Grandmaster Abhijit Kunte, an earlier guide, once predicted Vidit’s potential to touch the Elo 2700 mark within a few years. Vidit’s skills shone at the 2019 Tata Steel Rapid and Blitz and the Skilling Open of the 2020–2021 online Champions Chess Tour. He was appreciated for his leadership skills as he captained the Indian squad to victory in the 2020 FIDE Online Chess Olympiad.
