Talented American gymnast Sunisa Lee, born in Sant Paul, Minnesota is an Olympian who won a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Sunisa is the first Asian American to win an Olympic title. She was inspired to take up gymnastics at six after watching Nastia Liukin and Shwan Jonshon on video. Sunisa’s mother was a refugee immigrant to the USA, and Sunisa is of Hmong descent. Her father registered her at the Midwest Gymnastic Center in Little Canada, Minnesota.
Sunisa Lee started her junior career in 2016 when she first appeared at the U.S. Classic. In 2017, she made her international debut at the Gymnix International Junior Cup, winning a silver medal on the uneven bars. Later, she received a gymnastics scholarship from Auburn University.
In 2019, at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Italy Sunisa Lee debuted as a senior international she won the all-around title and a Gold medal and took the U.S team to the finals. In the 2019 U.S. championship, Sunisa Lee was second in all-around behind and in first place on uneven bars. Due to her performance, the U.S. qualified for the world championship.
Sunisa has so far, won many titles in 2021 and 2022 including the Uneven Bars – Gold and Balance Beam – Bronze at the 2021 Winter Cup, and the Uneven Bars – Gold and Balance Beam – Gold at the 2021 American Classic. Sunisa Lee is a celebrated gymnast, who won multiple medals at the 2021 Olympic Trials and the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She has also received several awards, including the 2021 Asia Game Changer Award, 2021 Sports Illustrated Female Athlete of the Year Award, 2021 SEC Freshman of the Year in gymnastics, and 2022 Women’s Sports Foundation’s Sportswoman of the Year.
