The Indian men’s hockey team was the main focus of the Tokyo Olympics 2020 Day 11 action. The gold hopes for the India men’s hockey team at the Olympics are now over. A 5-2 loss in the semi-final against Belgium means India can at best win a bronze medal now. It is a disappointing result for the Indians, who played valiantly to make it as far as they did. However, they were undone by conceding a number of penalty corners – something Belgium took full advantage of. Tuesday (August 3) also saw Indian wrestlers begin their campaigns. Wrestler Sonam Malik ended her campaign in Tokyo before it could even begin. The Indian, who took on Bolortuya Khurelkhuu from Mongolia in the round-of-16 match, ended up losing by the smallest of margins and is therefore out of the tournament. In addition, India had a disappointing performance in the men’s shot put and women’s javelin throw events.

Tuesday comes after India had a relatively good day at the Tokyo Olympics the day before (Monday). The Indian athletes might not have won any medals but there were some exceptional performances. The highlight of the day was of course the brilliant victory of the women’s hockey team against Australia in the quarter-final. They have qualified for the semis for the first time in history. The final two quarters saw a barrage of Australian attacks as the Indian players fiercely defended their goal.

Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur also had a marvellous showing as she finished in sixth place in the final of the women’s event. Capping it off, equestrian Fouaad Mirza scripted history as he became the first Indian to make it to the final round of an equestrian event at the Olympics.
