It was an eventful day at the Tokyo Olympics on day 11. There was a legendary race that is being hailed as the greatest of all time. New world records were set in the race as well. American basketball sensation Kevin Durant showed exactly what he is made of as his incredible performance saw the US through to the final of the competition. The Brazilian men’s football team took one step closer to defending their Olympic crown as they made it to the final for the second successive time. The men’s welterweight event in boxing saw Great Britain win their best ever medals tally in the sport.

WARHOLM SMASHES WORLD RECORD

History was made on the tracks in the men’s 400m hurdles final. Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm shattered his own world record with a time of 45.94 seconds to win the gold medal in what is being hailed as the greatest men’s hurdles race of all time. The previous record was 46.70 seconds. Warholm was matched stride for stride by US athlete Rai Benjamin. In the end, it was just a matter of who had more stamina, and it was Warholm. Benjamin finished in second place while Brazil’s Alison dos Santos won the bronze.

ELAINE THOMPSON-HERAH WINS 200m GOLD

Jamaican sprinter Elaine Thompson-Herah added yet another medal to her illustrious cabinet as she took the gold medal in the women’s 200m final to complete her Olympics double. The Jamaican had recently broken Florence Griffith Joyner’s 33-year-old record in the 100m event. She set a time of 21.53 seconds in the 200m final, which is now a new national record. Namibian sprinter Christine Mboma won the silver medal and US athlete Gabrielle Thomas won the bronze.

KEVIN DURANT FIRES US BASKETBALL TEAM INTO FINAL

It was an incredible day in basketball for the US team. At one point in their quarter-final match against Spain, they were trailing by 10 points. However, a Kevin Durant masterclass saw them over the line and into the semi-finals. Durant scored an incredible 29 points as the US took the game 95-81. Spanish player Ricky Rubio also had an amazing performance as he shot 38 points. Slovenia also progressed to the semis with a 94-70 win over Germany. France beat Italy 84-75 and Australia comprehensively won against Argentina by 97-59.

BRITAIN WINS BEST-EVER BOXING MEDALS TALLY

The final of the men’s welterweight category in boxing was also scheduled for the day. Even before the match had begun, Great Britain had made history in the sport. Pat McCormack was the British boxer in the final, which meant that he would at least win the silver medal. This meant that GB had six total medals in boxing this year. That is one more than their best tally of five in 2012. McCormack was, however, comfortably defeated 5-0 by Cuban athlete Roniel Iglesias.
