The men’s 400m hurdles certainly lived up to expectation and much more with the top three runners going under 47 seconds. Karsten Warholm won the 400m hurdles title at Tokyo Olympics 2020 with a world record timing of 45.94 seconds. Meanwhile USA’s Rai Benjamin who won the silver medal also broke the world record set by Warholm last month. Bronze medal went to Brazil’s Alison dos Santos with a timing of 46.72 seconds.

Warholm started out of the blocks like a man on fire, taking an early lead but Benjamin had other ideas. The American was sprinting with Warholm down the final straight and for a while it looked like the Norwegian might fade out but the 25-year-old had enough fuel to make a final surge and destroy his own world record.

Karsten Warholm had broken Kevin Young’s 29-year-old world record last month and now he has won the Olympics title to add to his resume.

The Tokyo Olympics, which was delayed by a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is now up and running. The Games have not been without their share of controversies, however.

The event is happening despite plenty of protests from the Japanese people against it. And the angst is not without reason. Tokyo is currently in a state of emergency due to a rise in COVID cases.

The Games will by and large be played out in the absence of fans, always a major psychological blow to athletes. There’s also been a number of cases reported in the Olympic village itself.

Nevertheless, the Games remain an event that many around the world will be keen to watch. From July 23 to August 8, many will be hooked onto their televisions to follow the events.
