Commonwealth Games gold medalists Jeremy Lalrinnunga (67 kg) and Achinta Sheuli (73 kg) have pulled out of the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 in Bogota, Colombia owing to injuries. Jeremy is still recovering from a thigh and hamstring injury sustained during his gold-winning performance at the Commonwealth Games in July. He also did not compete in the Asian Championships in October. While Achinta withdrew from the World Weightlifting Championships in Bogota due to a hamstring strain. Sheuli, who was scheduled to compete in Group C of the 73kg men’s event on Friday, injured his left hamstring muscle during warm-ups.

India took home one medal from the competition. Mirabai Chanu, the top Indian weightlifter, earned a silver medal in the women’s 49kg event on December 6, 2022. The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist added another medal to her collection after winning the gold in the 2017 competition with a total lift of 200 kg (87 kg snatch + 113 kg clean & jerk). While Chanambam Rishikanta Singh (61kg) and S Bindyarani Devi (59kg) finished 22nd and 25th in their respective competitions.

The 2022 World Championship is the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics, in which weightlifting events will be reduced from 14 to 10 from the Tokyo Games. However, it is an optional event rather than mandatory. A lifter must compete in both the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup in order to qualify for the Olympics in 2024.

Additionally, the lifter is required to compete in three of the following competitions: the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix I, the 2023 Grand Prix II, and the 2024 Continental Championships. At the conclusion of the qualification period, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will release each weight category’s Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR). The final evaluation of a weightlifter will be based on their top three results at the qualifying competitions.
