Tokyo Olympic silver medalist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion Mirabai Chanu overcame a wrist issue to clinch the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category at the World Weightlifting Championships 2022 in Bogota on December 7, 2022. Mirabai competed in the championship despite hurting her wrist during training in September. With this, she ensured herself another international medal after winning the gold at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Birmingham before the end of the year 2022. Jiang Huihua claimed her third world title despite failing to reach 120 kg in her final attempt. The bronze medal went to her compatriot and current Olympic champion Hou Zhihui, who skipped her third attempt after performing a 109-kg in the clean and jerk.

Mirabai, the national record of 88kg in snatch, began the proceedings with an 84 kg lift but failed to lift 87 kg on her second attempt in a very competitive setting. She lifted 87kg with difficulty in her third Snatch attempt and placed fifth, trailing behind China’s Jiang Huihua (93kg), Mihaela Cambei (90kg), Tokyo Olympic champion Hou Zhihui (89kg), and Nina Sterckx (89kg) of Belgium. Then, it was the time for Clean and Jerk category in which Mirabai also holds the world record with a lift of 119 kg. Mirabai failed to lift 111kg in her first clean-and-jerk attempt before succeeding in the second and moving back into contention for a podium finish. In her final attempt, the ace Indian weightlifter lifted a total of 113kg to secure India’s first medal in this edition of the championship.
