Archery World Cup 2023: Dhiraj Bommadevara defeats World No. 4 Brady Ellison; in semis

At the Tokyo Olympics 2020 trials too, Dhiraj Bommadevara missed out on a berth by finishing fourth in the national trials.

At the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 1 in Antalya on Friday, the 21-year-old recurve archer Dhiraj Bommadevara defeated some experienced competitors to advance to the men’s individual semifinals.  Three Indian archers performed admirably in the recurve disciplines. Dhiraj, who is rated fifteenth, advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Theo Carbonetti of Belgium 6-0, Keziah Chabin of Switzerland 6-4, and Ziga Ravnikar of Slovakia 6-4. In the quarterfinals, Dheeraj defeated two-time World Championship gold medalist and multiple Olympic medalist Brady Ellison of the United States 6-5 (10*-10). 

Brady Ellison, the four-time gold medalist at the Pan American Games, won the opening set, but in the very next set, Dhiraj came back to level the match with a perfect 30. The following three sets of the game saw both shooters receive one point each, forcing a shoot-off between the shooters. Dhiraj then shot closer to the center in the shoot-off to proceed to the quarter-finals of the Archery World Cup 2023. In the quarters, he got the better of three-time Olympian and teammate Tarundeep Rai 6-4 to reach the semis of the prestigious event.

Dhiraj Bommadevara – One of the most consistent archers of India

Dhiraj Bommadevara made the Indian Archery squad for the Archery World Cup 2023 and other international tournaments after winning the trials ahead of Atanu Das and Tarundeep Rai. The 21-year-old has established a reputation in Indian archery owing to strong performances on the national circuit. In fact, in the Tokyo Olympics 2020 trials too, Dhiraj Bommadevara missed out on a berth by finishing fourth in the national trials. Dhiraj will be eyeing a podium finish in stage one of the Archery World Cup 2023 in Antalya, Turkey as he faces sixth-placed Moldovan Dan Olaru in the semi-finals. The semi-final will be held on 23rd April, Sunday. The gold medal and the bronze medal matches of the men’s recurve individual and team events are also scheduled for the same day.

Results of other athletes who represented India in recurve event

Tarundeep defeated Viktor Ruban of Ukraine 6-0, Alviyanto Prastyadi of Indonesia 6-5 (9*-9), Fumiya Saito of Japan 7-3, and Mexican Matias Grande, who defeated Neeraj Chauhan of India 6-0 in the first round before losing to Tarundeep 6-5 (9-7) in the quarterfinals. Atanu Das, who is placed fourth, got the better of Mohammad Sagor Islam of Bangladesh 6-2, Jeff Henckels of Luxembourg 7-1, and Adrian Munoz of Puerto Rico 6-0. He was defeated by China’s Xiangshuo Qi 3-7. Bhajan Kaur defeated three opponents in the women’s division, including top-ranked Alejandra Valencia, the Olympic and World medalist, 6-5 (10-9). China’s Muyan Qui defeated her by a score of 6-2. Simranjeet Kaur and Aditi Jaiswal were defeated in the first round, while Ankita Bhakat’s journey came to an end in the third round.
