Jyothi Surekha Vennam clinched the Archery World Cup 2023 Stage 1 competition in Antalya, Turkey, to claim her first individual gold medal at the competition. After 20 efforts and 11 years, Vennam earned the women’s World Cup after defeating world No. 1 Ella Gibson in the semifinals and five-time World Champion Sara Lopez of Colombia in the final game. Vennam has been an exceptional competitor in the women’s compound event all throughout the week, matching the world record with a score of 713 in the qualifying round and taking home the gold for the mixed team with her partner Ojas Pravin Deotale.

An elated Jyothi Surekha Vennam said, “I’m actually short of words. I’m really happy and thankful to many people. I won this but there are so many people behind me.” The 26-year-old Jyothi is eagerly awaiting upcoming competitions, such as additional World Cup legs, World Championships, Asian Games, and her maiden participation in the World Cup Finals. Vennam defeated her Colombian opponent Sara Lopez by 149-146 in the gold medal playoff. This was her second gold medal from the competition.

In the compound mixed team competition, she and her 19-year-old partner Ojas Pravin Deotale defeated Chinese Taipei 159-154. In addition, Jyothi’s win over Lopez compensated for her earlier setback in the World Championship final, where she had to settle for silver after losing to Lopez in Yankton 2021 by 144-146. Jyothi defeated world No. 1 Ella Gibson of the United Kingdom in the semi-finals, 148-146.

What happened in the men’s compound event?

Jozef Bosansky needed 15 attempts in the men’s compound event to finally make the World Cup podium. After a tense 149-148 triumph over American teenager Sawyer Sullivan, who also succeeded in winning his first World Cup podium finish, the 46-year-old Slovakian won his first-ever gold medal. Bosansky, identified for his expressive demeanor at the shooting range, dominated the match from the start, missing a perfect score solely because of a nine in the third round. He said, “I’m excited, I feel like a child when they’re given a surprise present. I need to go and cry! I wanted to go up onto the stage like a winner and stay positive.”

Other results from the compound medal matches

Elisa Roner, an up-and-coming Italian archer, earned her first appearance on the World Cup podium by winning bronze. Following a close 146-144 loss to Lopez in the semi-final, Roner’s bronze medal match against Gibson was a back-and-forth battle with both archers taking the lead. However, the 21-year-old emerged victorious in the single arrow tie-breaker. Men’s bronze went to Malaysia’s Mohd Juwaidi Mazuki, who achieved a 148-146 win over five-time World Cup Finals winner Mike Schloesser of the Netherlands.
