The top scorer in the season-opening World Cup Stage 1 here on Tuesday was renowned Indian compound archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam. She equaled the qualifying record of 713 points. The Indian women’s team secured the top seedings ahead of Mexico thanks to Jyothi’s joint world record score. Both teams will begin their tournament campaigns in the quarterfinals. To match Sara Lopez’s world record score from the 2015 Colombian National selections, the 2021 World Championship silver medalist landed the arrow on target an amazing 66 times out of 72 shots.

World record

The Telangana archer Jyothi Surekha Vennam, shot 360 out of 360 to break a six-year-old Asian record, was on point after scoring 353 points overall in the first six rounds. The previous Asian record qualifying score for the compound women’s division was previously held by Korean archer So Chaewon, who shot a 709 at the 2017 Asian Championship in Dhaka. “My personal best in a competition was 710, so I never anticipated it. My best score is this, too,” Jyothi said.

I thought I shot a liner arrow in the end, but Great Britain’s coach was standing behind me and said, “No, it’s a ten and you shot great.” The player said, “It feels great to be the top seed, and I’m happy with my shooting. I was only focused on my procedure up until the final arrow. For the time being, I want to concentrate on my shooting so that I can keep up my scores and everything.”

Men Compound Archers struggled

Three points adrift of Jyothi from third-place finisher Sara, who is ranked third in the world.  Aditi Swami, making her World Cup debut, shot 700 and finished the qualifying round in 19th place. While Avneet Kaur (699) completed the Indian team effort. The compound men’s archers struggled without multiple World Cup gold medalists Abhishek Verma, who was unable to qualify.

Other Indian players

The top Indian player, Ojas Deotale, 20 years old, finished in 17th place with 709 points, earning his first-ever start. Veteran Rajat Chauhan and Prathamesh Jawkar, who was ranked 29th and 30th respectively, were the best Indians after Ojas and were separated by only three points. Debutant Rishabh Yadav (704) finished in 38th place and will compete only in the individual division. He was unable to make the three-person Indian team. With 2121 points, the Indian compound team finished sixth and advanced directly to the pre-quarterfinals. They will compete against Chinese Taipei, the 11th-seeded team.
