The Khelo India University Games 2023 commenced with a grand inauguration ceremony held at the cricket ground of Babu Banarasi Das (BBD) University on May 25, 2023.
The third installment of the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) began on May 25, 2023, and is slated to continue through June 3, 2023. This multi-sport event is taking place across four prominent locations in Uttar Pradesh – Lucknow, Varanasi, Greater Noida, and Gorakhpur. However, the capital city, New Delhi, has been chosen as the venue for all shooting events. The BBD University in Lucknow is set to transform into a large Sports Village during the Khelo India University Games 2023 to give the athletes and spectators a unique atmosphere. The games are an integral component of the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, aimed at boosting grassroots sports and spotting budding talents from diverse corners of the nation.
The Khelo India University Games 2023 commenced with a grand inauguration ceremony held at the cricket ground of Babu Banarasi Das (BBD) University on May 25, 2023. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, made his virtual presence felt as he declared the games open through a virtual meeting. The event will reach its grand finale with a closing ceremony at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) in Varanasi on June 3, 2023. The third edition of KIUG will witness the participation of approximately 4,000 athletes hailing from nearly 200 universities across India. These athletes, all under the age of 27, will compete in 21 different sports disciplines, with rowing marking its first appearance at the games. In the last edition, Jain University, Karnataka, was the host and ultimately emerged the champion. Swimmer Siva Sridhar was the most successful athlete in the previous iteration, with seven gold and two silver medals.
