Indian sportspersons have been doing exceptionally well in sports tournaments. On April 30, 2023, it was a great day for Indian sports and their fans as Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty became the first men’s doubles pair to win a gold at the Badminton Asia Championships 2023 in Badminton, Sumit Nagal became the first Indian athlete to win an ATP challenger event on the European soil, and Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon won the mixed skeet gold medal at the ISSF Shotgun World Cup in Cairo. The athletes are constantly bringing glory to the nation and will continue to do so in the month of May as well. Let’s take a look at some of the significant international events and which will feature the Indian athletes in the month of May.

Men’s World Boxing Championships (Sport – Boxing, Date- May 1 to May 14, 2023)

The Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 will take place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from May 1 to May 14, 2023. The Indian 13-member squad for the championship competition in Tashkent will be led by six-time Asian Championships medalist Shiva Thapa, the 2019 Asian Championships silver medalist Deepak Bhoria, and Akash Sangwan. 

Around 640 boxers from 104 nations, including seven reigning world champions like Tomoya Tsuboi from Japan, Sofiane Oumiha from France, and Sewonrets Okazawa, will compete in the championship. Additionally, the competition will be an Olympic qualifying event for Paris 2024. The gold medal winners will get USD $200,000 in prize money. The winners of the silver medal will receive USD 100,000, and the winners of the two bronze medals will receive USD 50,000 each.

Asian Weightlifting Championships (Sport – Weightlifting, Date – May 3 to May 13, 2023)

The Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 is slated to be held from May 3 to 13, 2023, in Jinju, South Korea. Based on their combined results (snatch + clean and jerk), the weightlifters taking part in these qualifying events will be eligible to raise their Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR). 

Based on their combined results (snatch + clean and jerk), the weightlifters competing in these qualifying events will be able to move up their Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR). After the qualification period for the Paris Olympics concludes on April 28, 2024, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will release the list of qualified athletes.

Diamond League – Doha leg (Sport – Athletics, Date – May 5, 2023)

The 14th edition of the Diamond League will be kicking off in Doha on May 5, 2023. Many Olympic and World Championships medalists will be starting their outdoor season which includes the reigning Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra. Neeraj will however face a stiff challenge from defending world champion Anderson Peters, in the men’s javelin throw.

World Table Tennis Championships (Sport – Table Tennis, Date – May 22 to May 28, 2023)

The World Table Tennis Championships 2023 is slated to take place from May 22 to May 28, 2023 at the Durban International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa. This will be the first championships to be held in Africa since the year 1939 when it was held in Egypt. India has announced a 10-member squad for the championships, which will be led by seven-time Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold medalist Sharath Kamal and Manika Batra.
