At the 2024 IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, Indian lifter Bindyarani Devi secured a bronze medal on Tuesday. In the women’s 55kg category, which is not featured in the Olympics, she achieved a combined lift of 196 kilograms—83 kilograms in the snatch and 113 kilograms in the clean and jerk—which placed her third.

Her performance, however, did not match her previous 203-kilogram lift that earned her a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The gold went to Kang Hyon Gyong of North Korea with a commanding 234-kilogram lift—103 kilograms in the snatch and 131 in the clean and jerk. Romanian Mihaela Cambei took the silver, setting a personal record with 201 kilograms—91 in the snatch and 110 in the clean and jerk.

25-year-old Bindyarani started with a misstep in the 83-kilogram snatch but succeeded in her second go. However, her attempt at 86 kilograms did not succeed. In the clean and jerk, she managed to lift 110 and 113 kilograms in her initial tries but couldn’t complete a 119-kilogram lift later.

Despite this, she earned a silver in the clean-and-jerk competition. Recognizing achievements in each portion of the event, medals are awarded separately for the snatch, clean and jerk, and total lifts at world-level competitions. Bindyarani Devi currently stands at the 29th spot in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for the 59-kilogram category.

The top 10 lifters in each weight class from this ranking will qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Mirabai Chanu, who ranks second overall, is set to secure an Olympic spot for India as she finished 12th in the 49-kilogram category in Phuket. Only Bindyarani and Mirabai represented India at this World Cup, which wraps up on April 11.

As the final chance to secure a Paris Olympics berth, the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand, is a pivotal stage for contenders.

Athletes aiming for the summer Olympics know the stakes are high in this competition. Despite setbacks and injuries over two years, Mirabai has clinched a spot for India in the women’s 49 kg category at the Olympics. Her impressive 200 kg combined lift at the 2022 World Championships puts her in a strong position for Olympic qualification, ranking second in her group.

The Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) is calculated using the sum of the snatch and clean and jerk lifts from various qualifying competitions. By April 28, the leading 10 lifters, with only one from each country, will be designated spots at the Paris Olympics based on their weights.

Mirabai Chanu performance in IWF World Cup 2024

After competing in the World Cup’s women’s 49kg Group B division and clinching third place on Monday, Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu is on the brink of securing her spot at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Following a hiatus due to injury, Chanu managed to lift a combined weight of 184 kilograms (81kg in the snatch and 103kg in the clean and jerk) at this critical event, which serves as the ultimate, compulsory qualifier for the upcoming Games.

By participating in this tournament, Chanu has met the necessary qualifications for the Paris Olympics, which require athletes to compete in two mandatory events plus three other qualifying competitions. Currently holding the world champion title from 2017, she is ranked second in her weight class according to the Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR), trailing only behind China’s Jian HuiHua. The final decision on who qualifies will be clear after the World Cup ends and the OQR is updated.

The top ten weightlifters in each category will book their tickets to Paris. Chanu, who last faced competition at the Asian Games in September and sustained a hip tendonitis injury, didn’t perform at her personal best during the World Cup. Nonetheless, she successfully executed five solid lifts, demonstrating her resilience and skill as she prepares for the Paris Olympics.
