Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo, Mirabai Chanu, made notable progress towards the 2024 Paris Olympics by securing a bronze medal in the women’s 49kg Group B at the IWF World Cup. Post a half-year recovery from injury, Chanu showcased her skill, lifting a combined weight of 184 kg (81kg in snatch and 103kg in clean and jerk) at this crucial qualifying event for Paris.

By competing in this tournament, Chanu fulfilled the requirements to contend in the upcoming Olympics, having taken part in two mandatory events and three other qualifiers. Presently holding the second spot in the women’s 49kg Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR), her official entry into the Paris Olympics awaits the finalization of the World Cup and subsequent updates to the OQR.

The best ten athletes in each category will earn their place in Paris. Although still recovering from a hip tendonitis injury sustained at the Asian Games last September, the 29-year-old Indian weightlifter completed five lifts. Despite not achieving her highest scores, her current form signals the possibility of further enhancement before the Olympics.

With a personal record of 88 kg in snatch and a previous world record of 119 kg in clean and jerk at the Asian Championships in 2021, Chanu has the opportunity to reach her top form by July. Her participation in Paris will be her third Olympic endeavor, where she aims to represent India as the sole weightlifting competitor.

Mirabai Chanu career highlight

Mirabai Chanu first tasted major success at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, securing a silver medal in the under 48 kg class. She then competed at the Rio Olympics in 2016 in the same category but was unable to log any successful lifts in the clean & jerk segment. In April 2021, Chanu clinched a bronze at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent.

She lifted 86 kg in the snatch phase and set a new world record with a 119 kg clean & jerk, totaling 205 kg. By June 2021, Chanu had clinched her spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, ranking second in the 49 kg category worldwide, becoming the only Indian woman in weightlifting to qualify. At the Tokyo Games, Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg in the 49 kg division, earning a silver medal and setting an Olympic record in the clean & jerk at 115 kg.

Her achievement marked India’s first medal in Tokyo, making her the first Indian woman to win Olympic silver in weightlifting, following sportspersons Karnam Malleswari and P V Sindhu in the Olympic medal tally. Following her Olympic feat, Manipur’s Chief Minister N. Biren Singh rewarded Chanu with ₹1 crore.

The Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, also honoured her with ₹2 crores, a promotion, among other rewards. Domino’s Pizza in India even promised her free pizza for life. Chanu continued her winning streak in 2022 at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, snatching gold in the 49 kg category. She lifted a combined weight of 201 kg across the snatch and clean & jerk events.

Live streaming and more about the IWF World Cup 2024

For the first time this year, Mirabai Chanu will be back in competition, holding the number two spot in the race for the women’s 49kg Olympic qualifiers. Fans can catch her live on Olympics.com. The silver medalist from Tokyo 2020, Chanu is set to participate in the upcoming IWF World Cup 2024 in Phuket, Thailand, on Sunday. This major event is crucial for those aiming for the Paris Olympics and it will be streamed online for viewers.

Since her hip injury during the Hangzhou Asian Games last October, Chanu, the 2017 world champ, hasn’t been in any global weightlifting contests. Despite that, the IWF World Cup 2024 is a must-go for athletes eyeing the Olympics, as it’s a requirement for qualifying for the games this summer.

Mirabai, who has had her share of injury challenges over the last two years, is well-placed to land an Olympic spot for India in the women’s 49kg class. At the World Weightlifting Championships 2022, which also served as a qualifier for the Olympics, she hoisted a total of 200 kg (87 kg in the snatch and 113 kg in the clean and jerk), placing her second in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for her category.
