Berhampur hailed as the cradle of weightlifting in India, is set to create history as it inaugurates India’s largest Weightlifting facility. Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik is set to inaugurate the Ganjam-based facility.

The facility has been specifically set in Berhampur owing to the contribution of Ganjam to weightlifting in India. Moreover, the academy boasts 30 platforms with international equipment and facilities, complemented by a 200-seat sports hostel.

Odisha’s Secretary of Sports and Youth Services, Vineel Krishna also took to his Twitter account to announce the inauguration of the same by the Chief Minister in a short period. He wrote, “India’s largest Weightlifting facility coming up in Berhampur, Ganjam, Odisha. With 30 platforms and a 200-seated sports hostel, Ganjam Weightlifting Academy will be the largest training centre for weightlifting in the country. It’s a tribute to the contribution of Ganjam towards weightlifting. Hon’ble CM Sh Naveen Patnaik will be inaugurating it shortly.”

For the past few years, the government of Odisha has sought to promote athletic pursuits as a viable career option for individuals across the state and the nation. Following the renovation of the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar and the establishment of the Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, the government is currently undertaking initiatives to develop sports hubs in various regions of the state.

In a recent development, the historic Barabati Stadium in Cuttack is set to undergo renovation, increasing its capacity to 60,000 seats shortly. The Rourkela Gymnastics Academy in Rourkela is also scheduled for inauguration as part of a government initiative. 

Furthermore, plans are underway for the construction of a football stadium in Sambalpur and a cricket stadium in Jharsuguda, signalling the state’s aspirations to emerge as a prominent sports destination in the country.

With a focus on developing sports infrastructure across the state, the Government of Odisha led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has been creating mega sporting infrastructure in various places under the 5T Initiatives. Berhampur has a rich history of producing some of the best weightlifters in the country who have won many international medals. The new facility will help nurture new talent and help budding weightlifters with advanced training.
