India's Roshbina Devi wins 2023 IWUF Wushu Sanda Female Athlete of the Year

Two-time Asian Games medallist Naorem Roshibina Devi was on Tuesday named International Wushu Federation's (IWUF) female athlete of the year.

Two-time Asian Games medallist Naorem Roshibina Devi was on Tuesday named the International Wushu Federation’s (IWUF) female athlete of the year in the Sanda category after a month-long public voting. Earlier in 2023, the 23-year-old Wushu star won a bronze and a silver in the 2018 and 2022 Asian Games. Roshibina had lost to Xiaowei in the women’s 60kg Wushu sanda event final at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.

Due to her impressive career, Roshibina attracted a cumulative poll of 93545 votes to beat Shahrbano Mansouriyan Semiromi (88179) of Iran and Wu Xiaowei (46753) of China. After the IWUF Athletes Committee’s preliminary evaluation, 45 candidates from 23 countries and regions entered the public voting in various categories, said the IWUF, which announced the results on Tuesday.

The Manipuri also won a bronze medal in the 2016 World Junior Wushu Championships. She was conferred with the Arjuna Award this year.

Career of Roshibina Devi so far

Coming from the small town of Kwaksiphai Mayai Leikai in Manipur, Roshibina Devi has had a very inspirational career so far. Moreover, she has put on a new identity for the sport of Wushu amongst a lot of Indians. Her journey in Wushu started with the 9th Asian Junior Wushu Championships held in Gumi, South Korea, where she won a gold medal.

In the 2018 Asian Games, she competed in the Women’s Sanda 60 kg event. She defeated Mubashra Akhtar of Pakistan in the quarter-finals, which assured her a medal. She lost to Cai Yingying of China in the semi-finals and was jointly awarded a bronze medal.

In September 2023, Naorem Roshibina Devi won silver in the women’s 60kg Wushu Sanda at the 19th Asian Games, in Hangzhou, China. However, unfortunately, Naorem lost to Wu Xiaowei of China in the finals.
