In New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Droupadi Murmu honored India’s top athletes with the National Sports Awards 2023 on a sunny Tuesday. Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, the badminton team, were unable to participate in the festivities as they were competing in the Malaysian Open, despite their Khel Ratna win. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has announced the recipients of the national sports awards for 2023.

The occasion was attended by well-known sports celebrities. Some of the notable athletes in cricket, archery, long jump, running, and wrestling include Mohammed Shami, Sheetal Devi, Aditi Gopichand Swami, Murali Sreeshankar, Parul Chaudhary, and Antim Panghal. They were among the 26 recipients of the Arjuna Award. Shooter Esha Singh, just 19, was also set to get the Arjuna Award but was away in Jakarta winning a gold medal for the women’s 10m air pistol.

Her win also booked India a spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Meanwhile, chess whiz R Praggnanandhaa’s coach, RB Ramesh, bagged the Dronacharya Award for being an awesome coach. The awards are normally given out on August 29, Major Dhyan Chand’s birthday, but were pushed to now because of the Asian Games in Hangzhou, which took place from September 23 to October 8 last year.
