Wushu, commonly known as Kung fu, is derived from traditional martial arts. It is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport. The word Wushu is a combination of two words- ‘Wu’ means war and ‘Shu’ means arts. In an effort to nationalize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts, the People’s Republic of China developed the sport. Today, Wushu has developed into a global sport, administered by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF). The federation hosts the World Wushu Championships every two years. Wushu is a recognized sport at the Asian, Southeast Asian, World Combat Games, as well as numerous other multi-sport competitions.
