Chess will make a return to the Asian Games after a 13-year gap in which India has so far won two gold and two bronze medals.
Board games were included as events during the 2006, 2010 and 2018 Asian Games. These games included chess, go, xiangqi, and contract bridge. Out of these, chess is the most popular game. In the medal tallies, the Central Asian countries. Apart from that, China has been a very tough competitor in these games. The Chinese team has won many medals over the years. However, in recent years India has also been a dominant force in the Chess circuit. Chess will make a return to the Asian Games after a 13-year gap. India has so far won four medals which comprises two golds and two bronze.
Veteran Grandmaster Koneru Humpy will lead a 10-member Indian chess team at the upcoming Asian Games 2023. Humpy will go into the Asian Games on the back of a stellar performance in the recently-concluded Global Chess League. The Indian squad will comprise five men and five women. The Indian players will compete in the individual as well as the team events at the continental showpiece.
The 17-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, who beat Norway’s world No. 1 and five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen multiple times, will also be in the fray. Alongside Rameshbabu, the men’s challenge will be led by Vidit Gujrathi, who captained the Indian team to a gold medal win in FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020.
