Asian Track Cycling Championships: India clinch gold, silver & bronze in an exemplary display

Indian cyclists made a positive start to the Asian Track Cycling Championships as they clinched gold, silver and bronze medals.

Indian cyclists made a bright beginning to the Asian Track Cycling Championships, winning gold in the women’s junior team clinched gold in the sprint event, a silver in the Para-Team Sprint event while bagging bronze in the Team Pursuit junior segment on Wednesday.

India’s women’s junior cycling team gave a fabulous performance outpacing South Korea to win gold in the sprint event on the opening day of the Asian Track Cycling Championships at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium here. The Indian side comprising Sarita Kumari, Niya Sebastian and Zaina Mohammed Ali Pirkhan outclassed the Korean team and secured gold in 53.383s. “It is like a dream for us to beat the strongest team in Asia. We did it with our teamwork,” said Niya after the race.

The para-cycling team consisting of Arshad Shaikh, Jalaluddin Ansari and Basavaraj Horaddi won silver in the Para-Team Sprint with an impressive timing of 1:02.661s. Malaysia grabbed gold (52.284s), while Saudi Arabia settled for bronze. Moreover, the women’s Junior side consisting of Harshita Jakhar and Dhanyadha JP secured a well-deserved bronze in the fiercely-contested Team Pursuit event, outpacing Chinese Taipei.

The Republic of Korea and Kazakhstan took home gold and silver respectively. Speaking up on their performance, Dhanyadha noted, “It was a neck-to-neck fight, and we were fortunate to clinch the bronze. This moment feels like a dream—a testament to the dedication and hard work that goes into competing at the Asian Championships.”

On the other hand, men’s Elite Sprint Team & the TOPS scheme athletes Rojit Singh, David Beckham, & Ronaldo Laitonjam blazed past the competition, setting a new National Record of 44.451 sec. This has been a phenomenal effort by the Indian cyclists considering the Paris Olympics which is around the corner.
