Twitter reacts as Gukesh D becomes no 1 in Chess rankings

If Gukesh D manages to maintain his lead over Anand until September 1, he will create history by becoming the first Indian to outshine Anand in the FIDE world rankings since Pravin Thipsay achieved the same in July 1986.

Dommaraju Gukesh, popularly known as Gukesh D, emerged victorious over local player Misratdin Iskandarov in the World Cup, held in Baku, Azerbaijan. This landmark triumph also enabled the 17-year-old to surpass veteran chess player Viswanathan Anand in the live world International Chess Federation (FIDE) rankings.

The young Indian talent delivered a brilliant performance, defeating Iskandarov from Azerbaijan in the second game of the second round, in a 44-move showdown. The International Chess Federation (FIDE) conveyed its enthusiasm through a tweet. The tweet stated, “Gukesh D won again today and has overcome Viswanathan Anand in live rating! There is still almost a month till next official FIDE rating list on September 1, but it’s highly likely that 17-year-old will be making it to top 10 in the world as the highest-rated Indian player.”

What’s next for Gukesh?

If Gukesh D manages to maintain his lead over Anand until September 1, he will create history by becoming the first Indian to outshine Anand in the FIDE world rankings since Pravin Thipsay achieved the same in July 1986. Gukesh has been steadily inching towards this goal. In an interview with ESPN in June, Gukesh had shared his ambitious aspirations.

Gukesh stated, “My very short-term goal is to enter the top-10. I’m quite close to it, almost there. In a few years, I would like to see myself competing seriously in the World Championship cycle. First of all, I would like to qualify for the Candidates tournament. I believe I have a fair shot and I’ll give my best. After Vishy [Anand] sir, I don’t think anyone came close to qualifying for the Candidates. Right now, with this whole group of young talents, it’s a very fair shot.”

The notable increase of 2.5 rating points propelled Gukesh’s live rating to 2755.9, which helped him in surpassing Anand’s 2754.0. Gukesh D moved up to be the 9th ranked player in the live world rankings. This resulted in descending the five-time World Champion Anand to the 10th position. Anand, who broke into the World’s top-10 in July 1991, has consistently held the position of India’s highest-ranked player since January 1987.
