The Archery World Cup is a competition started in 2006 by the World Archery Federation. The archers compete in four stages across four countries and the best eight archers of each category advance to an additional stage to contest the Archery World Cup Final. Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the Silver medalist of the World Championships will headline the Indian challenge at the Archery World Cup 2023 stage 3. India will be fielding a 16-member archery team – eight men and eight women for the third archery World Cup of the year. Veteran Olympian Tarundeep Rai will be in action but Atanu Das will miss this event.
Tushar Shelke and Mrinal Chauhan have replaced Atanu Das and Neeraj Chauhan, respectively, for the meet on the basis of selection trials for the World Cup Stage 3. Dhiraj Bommadevara will be the one to look out for in the men’s recurve contingent. The 21-year-old won a silver and a bronze in the men’s recurve team and individual events, respectively, in the first leg.
In compound archery, Jyothi will be a top medal prospect. The 26-year-old had the support of Ojas Pravin Deotale to win the compound mixed team gold medal in both the previous World Cup legs this year, first in Antalya and second in Shanghai. Columbia will be no different for Jyothi as she will be gearing up to outshine herself again. Meanwhile, Abhishek Verma, a two-time individual World Cup gold medallist, will return to the Indian men’s compound team after missing the first two stages. India has won cumulatively 7 medals in Antalya (Turkey) and Shanghai (China). Naturally, the archers will be itching to get a few more medals under their kitty. However, the most prized treasure of this meet is a ticket to Archery World Cup Finals in Mexico in September.
