Garry Tonon is unwavering in his pursuit of the featherweight championship of the organisation after suffering defeat in his maiden ONE Championship title match last year. The knockout loss hasn’t dampened Tonon’s determination, as he is committed to becoming the featherweight champion and harbours aspirations of becoming a two-division titleholder in the ONE Championship. Tonon acknowledges the challenge ahead but remains focused on his ultimate goal.

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Tonon shared his aim, noting that his main goal is to win the featherweight championship for ONE Championship. However, he also looks beyond that, drawing inspiration from Martin Nguyen, a former two-division champion in the organization. Tonon aims to follow in Nguyen’s footsteps, but he understands the importance of securing the featherweight title before pursuing further conquests.

Garry Tonon returns to the cage with new strategies after learning from a loss

Tonon will make his return to the cage at ONE Fight Night 12, where he will face Shamil Gaanov in his second fight since suffering a knockout defeat to Thanh Le for the featherweight title in March 2022. Tonon acknowledges that the loss was a valuable learning experience, even though it occurred within 56 seconds. The decorated grappler emphasizes the need to reassess his strategies and evolve his approach to minimize risks while capitalizing on his diverse skill set.

Reflecting on the past, Tonon believes the key lesson he learned is that he should not frequently prioritize the strategy of grabbing the leg and falling back as a preliminary move due to the inherent risks involved. Despite having achieved quick victories using this technique before, Tonon recognizes the importance of relying on other skills that offer a safer path to winning. He acknowledges the value of having this move in his repertoire but emphasizes that he will not completely abandon it in future fights.
